Freaky Fridays: TGIF

Welcome to Freaky Fridays! Today we look back at one of the films that sought to take advantage of the young people's fascination with Disco- Thank God it's Friday.

You can tell from the beginning that this Friday was not your father's Friday, since it starts with the Columbia Pictures Torch Lady dancing to that disco beat. This wouldn't be the first or last time she did something other than carry a torch, but it sure was the grooviest thing she's ever done!

Featuring a star studded cast of talented singers, Thank God it's Friday pretty much exists to give them an opportunity to produce a 'boss' soundtrack while the rest of the running time is spent following unrelated story lines of a group of young people spending their night at a disco; sort of like an extended Love Boat episode featuring Jeff Goldblum.

The non-musical parts of the movie are about as riveting as can be expected considering they exist solely to pad out the movie's running time. Hey look, Donna Summer is in this one!

Did we mention this film's sole purpose was to sell soundtracks? This 8-Track copy is the most 1970's thing you'll see all day:

This modestly budgeted film made a modest profit at the box office. That plus the soundtrack sales were good enough for Columbia Pictures. They were able to hustle all the way to the bank. Now a random screenshot from the film, which serves as a sound warning to those who bought an 8-track player on the installment plan and missed a payment- Woolco *will* track you down and it won't be pleasant:
